In the new Guitar Center ad I found the new Slash signature models. Drooooool.
Pickups are identical across all models (Seymore Duncan Alnico Pro-II Hum), neck/action settings = Slash Profile™ (Gibson took Slash’s guitar and spec-ed out the neck), I imagine most of the sound differences come from the body constructions. For instance, the top end $10,000 model is a luxurious one piece mahogany construction (the exact replica of Slash’s best axe, so they claim). I see Slash is talking up even the low end Epiphone model which is $1000, but I bet he meant that for starters who are just switching over from Guitar Hero III to the real instrument. I personally would love to get my paws on the Gibson Custom Slash model.

So I went to the Guitar Center in San Jose to test out the bad boys. I tried both the Epiphone and Gibson models.
Verdict? It’s an another Les Paul. Worst of all, I didn’t even like the feel of the neck. The action is ok but the neck feels sticky. I can see why Slash would like this since he loves to stay in one place and bend all day long…. but no, not me sir! I guess I won’t be buying this guitar.
In terms of the sound, I didn’t feel much difference between the Epiphone and the Gibson model, so if you don’t mind having the cheapo-Epiphono badge on your guitar, there’s a way to save $1500 on a Slash model.
In the end, I put down the Slash guitar fairly quickly and started playing Ibanez JEM (i.e. Steve Vai guitar) on a sweet sweet EVH amp setup. Gosh I love that guitar.
If I had to choose between the Epiphone Slash guitar ($1000) and Ibanez JEM ($1700) I’d buy the JEM at $700 premium.
